Shiatsu Massage

Some history says Shiatsu is a two-syllable Japanese word but may have originated from China centuries ago. The first syllable ’shi’ means ‘fingers’ and ‘atsu’ means ‘pressure’ , this clearly explains the principle of shiatsu massage which is to apply pressure through the use of fingers. However, shiatsu massage has evolved over the years as many shiatsu therapists today also use thumbs, palms, elbows, forearms, knees and feet.

Shiatsu massage sessions usually take 40 to 1 hour duration, depending on the needs of the client. It starts with gentle stretching and joint rotations to manipulate or warm the body up. Clients may be asked to lay naked but covered with a towel or blanket or enjoy the massage fully-clothed. Apart from the relaxation it does to the human body it has several health benefits. It has an immediate effect to the stimulation of circulatory, lymphatic and hormonal systems. It also helps regulate the activity of the nervous systems.

Preparatory Tips:

  • *it is ideal not to eat heavy meals before any shiatsu massage session
  • *First timers may fill out necessary forms about medical history, preference, so it is ideal to be at the spa ahead of time to discuss issues with the therapist before the massage session.
